Health & Nutrition

The Head Start program ensures that all enrolled children have up-to-date immunizations.

  • Parents fill out a health history and nutrition screening at registration that helps to guide us in providing the health and nutrition care every child may need.

  • Screenings for hearing and vision are performed in the first 45 days of the program year and referrals are made if needed.

  • All children are required to have a recent physical and dental exam on file within 90 days of enrollment. Parents assist in making and getting their child to these appointments, in addition to, providing Head Start with the required forms.

  • Children in the program receive healthy meals and snacks that are high in nutrients and low in fat, sugar and salt. Each child in a part-day setting receives meals and snacks that provide at least 1/3 of the child’s daily nutritional needs and children in full-day programs receive meals and snacks that provide ½ to 2/3 of the child’s daily nutritional needs depending upon the length of the program day.

  • Children’s height and weight are measured twice a year. We provide educational materials regarding healthy eating and living.

  • In collaboration with Lakeshore Community Health Center (LCHC) School Dental Program, all children with parent permission are able to receive dental care (cleaning and an exam) while they are in school.

  • Parents are invited to help with vision and hearing screenings, sit on our Health Advisory Committee and participate in our menu planning.
